History

Throughout its 90 year history, the Junior League of Oakland-East Bay, Inc. (JLOEB) has focused its efforts on improving conditions for vulnerable children throughout Oakland and the East Bay area. We have done that by collaborating with local community-based organizations and social service agencies to develop sustainable strategies that address unmet community needs, providing resources to community organizations, and dedicating volunteers to support project development, implementation, and outreach efforts.

The impact of nearly nine decades of Junior League voluntarism can be seen and felt throughout the Bay Area community. To date, JLOEB has committed more than 7 million volunteer hours and approximately $3 million to efforts aimed at improving the lives of children and their families in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The following are a few of the more than 150 direct service projects that JLOEB has implemented since 1935: Junior Center of Art and Science, Oakland (1940’s-1955); The Family Stress Center, Concord (1977-1981); The Family Center at Children’s Hospital Oakland (1985-1988); Teach for America, Oakland (1998-2001); the award-winning Super Stars Literacy Program (2000-present). These are real undertakings that focus on critical needs in the East Bay area, and leave a lasting and positive impact on the community.

As we move towards our 90th year of service, we invite you to invest in our future and our programs. We believe in building strong partnerships that foster the growth and well being of our ever-changing community. The JLOEB is committed to shaping the future and we believe in making what is thought to be the impossible a reality.
